I have several friends with "after market" antennas on their 580's,
while I have always used the origional. We have never noticed any
differnce. ANY shortened antenna is NOT going to work as well as a full
size antenna.

Why not CQ on a repeater? In Europe this is VERY common.

Co-ax cable isn't just used as a transport medium, there are also some
low Z cables made for use in transformers.
These live in specialist manufacturer's catalogues and often don't have
Radio Guide numbers.

What you are hearing is <S>ingle <S>ide <B>and, commonly called SSB
which, unlike the broadcast signal you can hear well, has no carrier.
The carrier has to be inserted at the receiver. It (the insertion
device) is called a <B>eat <F>renquency <O>scillator (a BFO) which
reinserts the carrier at the receiver. If you want to listen to the
stuff, you will have to get a communication receiver. 99% of the
conversations by voice between Amateur Radio operators (Hams) between
1.8 and 30 Mhz is on SSB.

Actually this radio changes the digital display in only 10 khz steps.
Is there a DSP algorithm that could be used to render intelligible speech
from the mistuned signals?
